Everything you need to know about Tennis
Tennis is a sport known for its global fame and widespread popularity. In this discussion, you'll explore fascinating details about the rich history of tennis, its evolution through the years, and a look at the most prestigious tournaments and the standout players who have shaped the game.
Tennis, also known as the sport of rackets, is the second most popular sport in the world, right after football, which holds the top spot among all sports.
How did tennis begin?
Tennis, or the game of rackets, began in the twelfth century when French nobles first played it. At that time, the game was quite primitive; players struck the ball with their hands rather than using a racket.
Tennis was originally known as the game of the nobles because it was reserved for the aristocracy and royalty at that time. Common people were not permitted to play.
When tennis moved to England in 1873, the introduction of rackets marked a new era for the sport. At that time, the game was still reserved for princes, royalty, and the bourgeoisie, while common people were not permitted to participate.
The Beginnings of Tennis
Most historians believe that the origins of tennis can be traced back to the twelfth century in France, where it was played in a primitive form. By the sixteenth century, the game had evolved, and rackets replaced the hand for striking the ball, leading to its name, the game of rackets.
Its fame reached remarkable heights in France and England, even though it was still considered a local game. King Henry VIII was an avid fan and supporter of tennis. In 1844, he and a group of enthusiasts established what is considered the world’s first tennis club at the Wimbledon resort.
There has been much debate about the origins of the first lawn tennis game and who truly deserves credit for its creation. Some believe that Walter Clopton Wingfield was the pioneer, introducing the game in 1873. He published a book on its rules that same year and obtained a patent for it in 1874.
Even though tennis is widely believed to have entered England in 1873, some opinions suggest that the first tennis club was actually established by the Englishman Harry Gem and a group of his partners in 1872 in Leamington. This aligns with what was previously mentioned regarding the location. It’s possible that Gem was one of the club’s founders, but his name wasn’t explicitly mentioned. The difference in the year might be due to a lack of precise timekeeping.
The popularity of lawn tennis continued to rise. In 1874, a prominent figure decided to organize a lawn tennis tournament, and by 1880, the tournament was successfully held.
The Principles of Tennis
the game of lawn tennis is played according to clear rules established by the international tennis federation or ITF
The concept of lawn tennis, or tennis, involves using a racket with specific characteristics to strike a ball of a certain size. The ball is hit over a net fixed in the middle of the court, with the goal of sending it to the opposing player on the other side. The opponent must then move quickly to return the ball when it reaches their side.
The Elements of Tennis
The key elements of lawn tennis consist of four fundamental components:
Tennis court
Tennis matches are classified based on the type of surface they are played on and are divided into several distinct types.
clay courts
This type of surface is widely used in Europe and Latin America. Movements and play tend to be slower on these courts, which are made of clay and fine sand. They are known for their affordability and ease of installation.
Grass courts
Grass courts limit the ball’s bounce, requiring players to have exceptional skill and physical prowess. Additionally, these courts need continuous, specialized maintenance and are significantly affected by weather conditions.
Hard courts
These courts provide a balanced playing style, as they do not negatively impact players or their performance, relying instead on the players' skill. This type of court is among the most widely used and is made from solid materials. The only drawback is that, due to its hardness, it may cause injuries to players.
Synthetic courts
These courts come in various types and use different synthetic materials, such as artificial grass, which requires less maintenance than natural grass courts. They can also be made with hard rubber for the playing surface.
Net
The net divides the tennis court into two equal halves and is set to precise dimensions. It is mounted on posts at each end, which are no more than 2.5 cm higher than the net and have a diameter of no more than 15 cm. The net itself is supported by a metal cable with a diameter not exceeding 0.8 cm.
The net on a tennis court should be 91.4 cm high at the center and 1.7 cm high at the ends.
A tennis ball must meet specific standards outlined by the game. It should weigh between 6.35 cm and 6.67 cm. The ball is hollow inside and made of rubber covered with fabric.
The color of a tennis ball varies depending on the player's age and the match duration. Players over eleven years old use green balls for shorter matches, while yellow balls are used for other types of matches.
Players aged nine to ten use orange balls, while children between five and eight play with red balls.
Racket
The racket is the tool used by players to strike the ball and send it to the opponent. It features a distinctive shape with a frame and a stringed area in the center.
The most commonly used tennis rackets are crafted from lightweight aluminum or a blend of graphite and fiberglass.
Rackets vary in design depending on the manufacturer. Some companies design them in a hexagonal shape, while others create them with a wider and broader frame.
The manufacturing of tennis rackets has evolved to enhance flexibility in striking the ball by combining graphite fibers with polymer composites. The grips are designed with materials that minimize vibrations, which can cause discomfort and injuries to the player's hand.
How to play Tennis
The player to begin serving is chosen by a coin toss. Once decided, the server takes position on the right side of the court, just behind the baseline, careful not to step on it. With a swift motion, the player strikes the ball with their racket, aiming to send it over the net and into the opponent’s side of the court, ensuring the ball avoids touching the net.
Should the ball strike the net at this moment and yet reach the opponent, the serve is repeated without any points being tallied. However, if the ball strays outside the receiver's box or remains within the server's area during the initial serve, the server forfeits that attempt without the opponent securing a point.
If the server fails to deliver the ball correctly on two attempts, a double fault is called and the server loses the point.
The receiving player may position themselves anywhere in their half of the court while preparing to return the ball. It is prohibited for the receiver to hit the ball before it has bounced once on their side, as doing so would award the point to the opponent.
The ball is continuously served and returned between players until one of them fails to return it correctly.
The winner in matches is determined by a group system. A player must win six games to win a set. The player is declared the winner if they win two out of three sets.
How are points calculated?
When the ball reaches a player in their half of the court, they must not touch or hit it more than once in their half; otherwise, a point is awarded to the opponent. They also cannot touch the net with their body or racket in their half, nor can they hit the ball before it crosses the net and reaches their side. Additionally, if the ball touches the player’s body or anything other than their racket, a point is awarded to the opponent.
When a player secures the first point, they are awarded fifteen points. Winning the second point elevates their score to thirty points. Achieving the third point brings their total to forty points. Finally, by clinching the fourth point, the player triumphs in the game.
Tennis match duration
A tennis match does not have a predetermined duration. The length of the match is determined by the skill of one competitor in concluding the game in their favor.
